What is the Best Age to Start Weening?
Before you start weaning, it's important you ensure your baby is the right age. Typically, the best time to begin weaning is when your baby is around six months old.
From the age of around 6 months, your baby should be eating a variety of foods alongside breast milk or formula milk to set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
As your baby grows, you will be able to give him or her smaller portions of the same foods as the rest of the family.
What is Needed for Baby Weening?
It can be a little bit confusing knowing what weaning equipment to get before you begin your baby’s weaning journey. Here are some essential items we recommend:
High chair - your baby should be seated safely in an upright position (in order to swallow correctly). Be sure the high chair has a securely fitting safety harness and ensure that you never leave your child unattended on raised surfaces.
Silicone suction bowls - A suction-based weaning bowl may be useful for keeping the bowl in place.
Silicone sippy cups - Introduce trainer cups or beakers from around 6 months and offer sips of water with meals. Using an open cup or a free-flow cup without a valve will help your baby learn to sip and is better for their teeth.
Silicone weaning spoons - Soft spoons are softer on baby's gums.
Bibs - Baby’s are extremely curious, which means there’s a likely chance they will play with their food before eating it. A bib will help to reduce the risk of mess.
Wipeable splash mat - This will help pick up any spillages from your baby’s food bowl.
What are the Benefits of Weaning?
There are an array of wonderful benefits that come with baby weaning. Firstly, your child has the opportunity to pick up, explore, and choose new foods. This helps them gain independence and allows them to get used to a plethora of different foods and textures from the beginning.
