Lots of Lovely Art

This art box includes creative projects for young people to express themselves through art. It is packed full of projects exploring the theme of Identity, be that through our face (in portraiture), our body or our varied emotions. Our identity is the unique sum of all our characteristics. We are born with some of them – our gender, our ethnicity and our body. Others grow and change with us, as we grow. Our identity influences the decisions we make; the people we choose as our friends; the fashions we adopt; and the politicians we come to support. Many artists use their work to express, explore and question ideas about our identity. Identity matters. The LoLA box is separated into three sections:• Portraiture, and how artists see behind our facial surface to depict something deeper than the mere outside appearance;• The Body, proportions and how it is central to facets of identity such as gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity;• And finally, Emotions and Expressionism, a style of art where the artist focuses on expressing their inner thoughts and feelings. We would estimate these art projects are appropriate for young adults, aged 11 plus. As always, art depends on the child’s interest, ability and maturity so if you feel like your 8 year old would be interested or if you’re a 34 year old and would enjoy the topic, go for it! What art materials will I receive? This art box includes a set of acrylic paints, a paintbrush, a styrofoam sheet and sticky foam for printing, a set of skin-tone soft pastels, collage papers and a journal.

The types of love that we feel are almost as varied as the people who experience it, as is the art that explores the subject. From Greek mythology to Hindu motifs, cultures and artists around the world have used a range of symbols to represent love in art, and we look at a few of these in the art projects in this box- for example, the hug, the kiss, the heart and the dance! Suitable for children  4 years and over. Each project has tips to tailor for young children In this box we look at how artists have depicted the heart shape in their work.For many of us, the word ‘love’ evokes the romance of fairy tales… But the reality of it can be very varied. Artists have drawn (and been drawn to) flowers for centuries. In this art box we are inspired by them all to create a variety of our very own floral masterpieces: From naive flower still lives to abstract floral multi-media paintings; from sun-prints to vases filled with egg-cup bouquets; from petal collages to beautiful painted paper flower crowns! Artists have used flowers to talk about joy and madness, and about beauty and sadness. For flowers have their own language: in art, as in life, roses signify love, and lilies, beauty. People give flowers as an expression of their emotions, to say things like “I love you” or “I’m sorry”… And the colours of flowers also mean different things: red often represents love; yellow, friendship; and blue, peace. Both art and music allow the artist to express their feelings and experiences…In this art box we look at how a variety of artists old and new portray musical instruments and musicians; at how they interpret sound in visual form; at how they use colour and music in tandem in their work; and finally at how some artists even designed album covers for bands and musicians! What's the story behind Magical Music? Art and music share many things. Some musicians, such as Wagner, Duke Ellington and Beyonce, actually experience sounds as a series of colours and shapes! And many famous artists have credited music as a muse for their work. Matisse is said to have played the violin every day – claiming that the discipline it required helped his concentration when he was painting… In this box children will make their own recycled guitar, create a jazz inspired collage, paint to music, make a boogie-woogie style abstract weaving, design musical stained glass windows, create their very own album cover, and finally draw what they think music actually looks like!
